Empire Crashes Out

Hit TV show Empire finished their most current season last night on E4 (although we are a little behind the Americans) and what an eventful climax it was.

But if your not a fan just yet, let me give you a quick rundown.

  • Based on the Lyon Family who run the Empire (it’s a record company, think Simon Cowell and his family but a hell of a lot cooler)
  • Cookie (the matriarch) has just been released from prison and her sights are firmly set on the business
  • Andre, Hakim and Jamal are three brothers who each have their own motive to become the head of the Lyon Dynasty
  • Other small details: nearly everyone has committed murder, slept with each other’s partners and been a little bit sneaky to get what they want. Normal everyday life then eh?

The series is not just popular for their storylines though, as similar to Glee but for an older audience, all the shows characters sing throughout the show and the music is released instantly.

The best song from this series has to be this:

Ok so let’s get back to the review of last nights cliffhanger episode.

From Hakim being jilted at the alter by Laura to his father Lucious marrying Anika, who is coincidently the mother of Hakim’s soon to be born child, it was all going down in last nights final episode of Season 2. Lucious broke up with Anika at the end of Season 1 after she cheated on him with his son but in order for her not to have to testify against him on a new murder allegation, they had to get married. I have heard about keeping it in the family but this is a whole new level!

And to top it all off, the final scene saw Anika (the woman who just got married) and Rhonda (wife of Hakim’s brother who was pushed down the stairs in her own home by Anika) out on a ledge. As they fought like cat and dog, back and forth, someone went over but who actually fell? We will have to wait and see.

Empire returns to US TV this September for their 3rd series and the U.K. and Ireland should get it later this Autumn.

In the meantime, head to Spotify, YouTube or ITunes to check out their amazing Season 1 and Season 2 albums.
