Ok, so who saw last week’s Billboard Music Awards from Las Vegas?
If you were one of the lucky ones, you will have seen the 7-minute opening to the show by the Princess of Pop. In a mega-mash-up of her greatest hits, Britney took to the stage but like me, you may have noticed that all wasn’t as it seemed.
Have a look at the performance here first:
So, what did you notice? The overly used robotic movements? No! Are you CRAAAAA-ZY?
Britney-Bot as I am going to refer to her for the duration of this article seemed a little em, stiff! Although many of her diehard fans have said she was ‘back to her old self’, whatever that means, there are a minority questioning whether it was even her. Can your body really move like that?
Apart from Britney-Bot trying to hide her lips at every opportunity she could find (behind a pole, in her hair, with her hand and even with a larger than life microphone strapped to her face), she was not the same fluid, relaxed and confident performer from the 90’s that we all fell in love with.
At first I thought it was my TV jumping, then I thought it may have been the effect they were going for and then I realised, nope she is just like a pre-programmed pop star. It kind of reminded me of the N*Sync video for Bye,Bye,Bye where they are controlled by strings and trapped inside toy boxes.
After reading this, re-watch the performance and try to enjoy it without jittering along with Britney-Bot. The performance around her was amazing when I got my eyes refocused from her barely-there costume, body and the constant thought of ‘she is a robot, this cannot be a real person’.
The Princess of Pop is currently playing a sell-out run of shows in Las Vegas and if you fancy sitting through a 2-hour mime act who is outshone by her dancers and set, get yourself there now. And hitting us one more time, we have a brand new album coming soon from her, she has certainly got to work (b*tch).
We can still give her credit where it is due though, she certainly knows how to put on a show and ride on top of a giant sized guitar! Good work Britney-Bot.
