Throwback to a good old day every Thursday.

TBT: To The Start Of Summer

Blue skies, the sun shining, holidays and no school was what a lot of you were excited about this time 3 months ago but where has the time gone?

As we begin September, it’s back to school, college, work and roll on the crap weather and dark afternoons. But just for the next 3 minutes let’s rewind the clock to the sound of summer.

This song started the summer off for us all:

Now as we approach the Christmas season we are all about jingle bells and presents…… goodbye summer 2016 and let’s wish for school and college to go so quick that summer 2017 is only around the corner.

TBT: Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini

Rewind to the year I was born (1990) and you will find that NO.1 on this day 26 years ago was one of the most catchy yet cringe songs of all time.

She wore an ‘Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini’ was the phrase that everyone was saying and the song that was stuck in everyones head for at least a year. The catchy summer song saw TV presenter Timmy Mallett take on the title of Bombalurina to release the single.

The video features a few ladies in the yellow polka dot bikini’s on a fake beach set but just remember back in the 90’s fake music video’s were all the rage.

This song is still a party favourite and no matter what age you are you know it and can sing along. Here it is to take you back and finish off your summer month of August with a bikini beach body feel.

TBT: Ed Sheeran Makes History

Rewind just 2 years to 2014 and ginger haired singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran made history.

He became the second male solo artist in history to spend 8 weeks at the peak of the UK Album Chart with his record ‘X’. The album which gave us songs including Sing, Bloodstream, Photograph and the multi platinum No.1 single ‘Thinking Out Loud’ became the second record to reach the feat of having 8 weeks at the summit with only James Blunt achieving the same in 2005 with his collection ‘Back To Bedlam’.

‘X’ went on to pick up Best British Album at the 2015 Brit Awards and was nominated for two Grammy’s (Best Vocal Pop Album and Album Of The Year). It is also the 6th best selling album in the UK of the decade with it going 8x platinum.

Here is the biggest selling song from that album, ‘Thinking Out Loud’.

TBT: 2002 – Dilemma

Rewind back 14 years and you will no doubt have had this song on your CD player or cassette player (kids, they came before MP3 players and iPods).

When Nelly teamed up with one third of Destiny’s Child Kelly Rowland we all felt a bit weird and had a little dilemma in our heads whether it would be brilliant or just terrible. Luckily for us and for them it turned out to be the first one, the song was an instant hit around the world.

After racking up 7 weeks at No.1 in the US and UK it was nominated for every award under sun including Grammy’s, Brits and Mobo’s.

‘Dilemma’ was the biggest hit of 2002 and still one of the biggest selling songs of the millennium, now that is good work for Beyonce’s backing singer and a guy with a sticker on his face. This song gave Kelly Rowland a platform to launch an even bigger solo career and TV career including being a judge on The X Factor.

Nelly is currently on the comeback trail and just released a new song called Millionaire with Cash Cash.

Now rewind back to 2002 and sit back and enjoy Dilemma.

#TBT 15 Years Later – No.1 – Atomic Kitten

Who remembers what they were listening to 15 years ago?

Well, if like me you were into Top Of The Pops and CD:UK every Saturday morning you will be more than familiar with what was No.1 on this day 15 years ago.

Kerry Katona had just left the band to marry Westlife gone solo star Brian McFadden and Atomic Kitten were being branded as the hottest girl group in the world, even though they only has one hit in the States. Jenny Frost arrived in the band and gave them 2 No1 singles one right after the other, sorry Kerry but you done them a favour.

Eternal Flame was the cover which stayed at No.1 for a number of weeks and the song which was originally sung by The Bangles is still stuck in my head.

Atomic Kitten have now reformed, well sort of. The original line up (with Kerry) got back together for The Big Reunion on ITV2 and then split up for a while, now they pop up on small festivals and the odd TV appearance when they are strapped for cash.

Will they ever be ‘Whole Again’? No is the answer, Jenny Frost has declined a reunion and it looks like the Kittens have had their nine lives at this stage. For now, enjoy their No.1 single:

#TBT : CBB – David’s Dead!

So I am throwing it back to fairly recently in honour of Celebrity Big Brother returning to our screens tonight on Channel 5/TV3.

Cast your mind back to January when David Bowie had just passed away and his ex wife Angie was residing in the celebrity compound. She emerged from the diary room after being told of the shock news and broke down in US reality TV star Tiffany Pollards arms. What was about to ensue after that moment none of us could of guessed.

One of the most iconic moments in BB history in my opinion it caused headlines throughout the world when Tiffay mistakingly thought she was talking about fellow housemate David Gest who was sleeping in the bedroom.

It caused the house to launch into a frenzy thinking they were in the house with a dead man but don’t worry he wasn’t dead at that point but the afternmath was hilarious. However all isn’t that funny as sadly since then David Gest has passed away earlier this year. RIP David.

Here is the funniest moment in CBB history!

#TBT 20 Years On – Wannabe at No.1

So exactly 20 years ago today, 5 girls who were set to become the biggest girl group ever were about to hit No.1 for the first time.

Scary, Baby, Sporty, Ginger and Posh were unleashed on us in 1996 with their girl power anthem ‘Wannabe’ and 20 years on, it is still one of the biggest pop songs in music history.

The fivesome were rumoured to be making a comeback to mark the 20th anniversary of the single but just last week rumours were confirmed when Emma, Geri and Mel B uploaded a new YouTube video announcing they would be reuniting as a three piece. Can the Spice Girls work as a threesome?

We can now keep up to date with the reunion at and I am still convinced that a full line up reunion will happen next year for maybe just a couple of dates, why would the two boring ones turn down all that cash for a few hours on stage?

For now have a throwback to when you were younger or possibly not even born to this day in 1996 when Wannabe hit the top spot!

#TBT : Spice Girls Crisps and 5ive Plan To Legalise Drugs

Two for the price of one today as I throwback to 1997 with the Spice Girls and 2000 with boyband 5ive.

1997: 19 years ago today Walkers created Spice Girls crisps. After the girl group’s assault on breakfast cereal, stickers, sweets and photographs, Walkers decided people would love to eat Spice Girls inspired potato chips. With each flavour branded with a different Spice Girl, the packets went on to sell 16 million units by the end of the year.

Here is the cringe-worthy advert from back in the day:

2000: Boyband 5ive were at the height of their fame and jumped on the bandwagon of wanting the UK to legalise cannabis. Both Jay and Richie from the band told Sky Magazine that the drug should no longer be outlawed and made the statement that ‘No one who smokes a spliff goes out and starts fights like someone who’s been drinking.’ Unfortunately for the band, cannabis has been kept at bay in the UK and although they tried to return during ‘The Big Reunion’, the public wanted to keep them at bay also and they have been stuck doing small nightclub appearances ever since. Sorry lads, it’s a slam dunk!

#TBT : 2009 – A Day To Remember

On this day in 2009 I think everyone had their eyes glued to the TV as the King Of Pop Michael Jackson was laid to rest. The ceremony was broadcast worldwide with the biggest commemorative service ever at the Staples Centre in America.

The tribute led service featured some of the biggest artists in the world singing his greatest hits including Mariah Carey, Jennifer Hudson and Lionel Richie. The memorial saw excerpts from what would have been his final ‘This Is It’ tour where he was scheduled to perform over 50 dates at the O2 in London. Set to be the biggest tour of his career, a future film of the show confirmed that he would never have been able to do the 2 month stint as he appeared weak, nervous and a shadow of the former man who could dance and perform all night long.

Just to prove how big the show would have been think about this, to rehearse the final stages of the show Michael Jackson and his team (which including High School Musical choreographer Kenny Ortega) hired out the Staples Centre (one of the biggest sports venues in America), just for rehearsals. The rest of use do with a dance studio or abandoned warehouse, he hires out the best venue in the USA.

The service on this day 7 years ago will be one that I will always remember as I sat glued to Sky News all day to watch performance after performance of world renowned stars paying their respects to the greatest entertainer to ever live as well as his family speaking about the star and even getting involved in the finale of the ‘show’. I keep getting the urge to say ‘show’ as that’s what it was, it wasn’t a service for him, it was a show of his life and how much he had crammed into it.

The singer was found dead at his home a few weeks previous and was returned back to Neverland Ranch before being laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in his own private tomb. This is a man that has influenced mine and so many other performers careers. He is still the King Of Pop.

Here is my favourite performance from the special Memorial Service at the Staples Centre:

#TT: Grease Is The Word!

Last week I was greeted by a grown man (in his 40’s I’d say) and he had NEVER seen possibly the best musical film EVER!

Yes, Grease was a figment of his imagination. He had an idea of the storyline and had heard the songs but never seen the actually film…. WHAT? was my first reaction. Ok, I admit I am a bit obsessed with this film from a dancer and choreographer’s point of view but how could someone who grew up around the time of this film not have seen it?

Let’s go back to this day in 1978 when Grease had just been released in cinema’s worldwide and what producers thought would be a cult film became the biggest musical phenomenon in years. Today started a 9 week run at No.1 in the UK charts for the biggest hit from the movie ‘You’re The One That I Want’.

The music soundtrack is the biggest selling film soundtrack of all time and still enters the charts regularly around he world. The film made icons out of Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta along with some of the lesser known stars including Stockard Channing and stayed at the box office top spot for weeks on end.

If you are one of the VERY few who have not seen this film, check it out TODAY!!! You will not be disappointed, from the music to the story and from the Rydell High surroundings to the car garage where they create the slickest car in film history which actually flies at the end of the film (ok, I ain’t a clue who sanctioned that decision either but let’s overlook that last scene), this is an iconic film that will have you dancing around your sitting room.

38 years later and still a massive song at every party when all the women think they are Sandy and the guys strut it out being Danny, this will live on, and on, and on….. Grease is definitely the word!
