December Means Christmas Songs!

So every year I try to hold back from listening to Christmas music until Christmas officially starts and for me that’s….. December 1st!

Ok, so I can’t hide from it totally as they are overplayed from the middle of October in most shopping centres and high streets around the world but now I can put the MTV Christmas channel on, Christmas 24 movies and put up the tree with just 3 weeks to go.

So what are the best Christmas songs? Everyone will go to the obvious Merry Christmas Everyone, I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday and even the now rejigged 3 times, Do They Know Its Christmas?, but for me it’s the lesser known ones that excite me.

Here are my top 5 Christmas crackers (go on play them all now!)

1. Kelly Clarkson – Underneath The Tree

2. Michael Buble – Baby Please Come Home

3. COMEDY CLASSIC – Geraldine AKA Peter Kay – Once Upon A Christmas Song

4. GUILTY PLEASURE – Justin Bieber – Mistletoe

5. THE REAL No.1 – Mariah Carey – All I Want For Christmas Is You

And finally if your looking for a good Christmas playlist to put on in the car and sing away too, then check out the Glee Christmas Album from a few years ago….. its cheesy as hell but festive!

Keep it here on PopOnDown for the latest Christmas fashion trends, music news and entertainment coming soon!

Summer Showcase Playlist

So today I decided to give you something a little different. A look into the other side of my day job. For the past 6 months I have been choreographing and producing a Summer Showcase for my school, Eclipse Stage School and it will finally hit the stage tomorrow night in Dublin.

So just to give you a playlist to get in the mood for it or maybe you won’t be at it but would like to hear the music involved, here it is.

From High School Musical to chart hits from Little Mix, Bieber and from Irish act Seo Linn to Latino Jennifer Lopez, I have a bit of everything in the mix.

Good luck to all my students taking part as well as all the crew and volunteers on this stage show, now go out there and nail it.

Half Year Music Review

So July has just dawned which means we are scarily already half way through 2016….. That didn’t take long did it?

Has it been a good 6 months for music (pop in particular) or have other genres and artists ruled the roost ? In my opinion, I think pop music has faired really well this past few months with the likes of Adele’s album chart reign and big chart hits for Zayn Malik, Justin Bieber and newcomer Shawn Mendes.

The UK singles chart has been dominated by one man this year and he comes in the form of ultra cool, top of the list collaborator Drake. His single ‘One Dance’ is the longest running UK Number One not only this year but for the past 9 years passing out Leona Lewis’ ‘Bleeding Love’. It is also the longest reigning single since the inclusion of downloads and music streams making it the most commercially successful single in the digital age. Not bad for a guy who at one stage couldn’t remember his name (ref: Rihanna collab on ‘What’s My Name?’)

In 2016, only 7 acts have held the Singles Chart top spot including Justin Bieber, Zayn, Shawn Mendes, Lukas Graham, Mike Posner and the first No.1 of the year came from a group of nurses and doctors who went by the apt name of NHS Choir with their mash up cover versions of ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ and Coldplay’s ‘Fix You’.

Over on the album charts Adele returned to the top spot with her album ’25’, making her one of very few artists to have the same album chart at No.1 in two consecutive years. Ariana Grande, Drake and Zayn Malik all had their first stint at the peak of the album charts in the past 6 months.

One of the biggest feats this year in music was for the first time ever the same artist occupied the top 3 singles on the same week. This was done by the boy that can’t go wrong it seems, Justin Bieber. ‘Love Yourself’, ‘Sorry’ and ‘What Do You Mean’ took positions 1,2 and 3 on the exact same week in January this year.

Another big bit of album chart history was made (or matched should I say) in David Bowie having 12 albums in the Top 40 all at once. This has not been accomplished by any other act apart from Elvis, EVER! Two of the worlds greats now share a bit of music history.

So overall, Justin Bieber aced it, Drake is still acing it and Adele is the ace herself. The year has belonged to pop so far and there is no sign of that slowing down in the next 6 months.

Keep it with me for your daily new music, news and playlists, 2016 also brought you this blog!

Monday Medley – New Video’s This Week

This Monday I am bringing you 5 brand new music videos from around the world.

Up first is the new video from Justin Bieber. Although we have heard this song for a while now he has just got around to making the video.

Could this be the new ‘Call Me Maybe’ or ‘Friday’? I certainly think it is this years one we shouldn’t like but LOVE. ‘Sweatshirt’ already has millions of views after just a week on YouTube.

Next up is girl group of the moment, Fifth Hrmony. Following on from their hit single ‘Work From Home’, this is ‘Write On Me’

DJ/Producer duo Axwell v Ingrosso are back with another summer stomper in the form of ‘Thinking About You’. Can this duo make a bad song? I think not.

Finally this week I am bringing you a brand new track from the King of Bling, Usher. He has just dropped new music for the first time in a couple of years and it is brilliant. Enjoy!

REVIEW: High Strung The Movie Soundtrack

High Strung is the newest and hottest dance movie on the block following in the footsteps of the Step Up franchise. Does it measure up to Step Up though?

YES! Not only does the storyline grab your attention from the first scene but the music is infectious throughout. Directed by Michael Damian and starring Jane Seymour, Keenan Kampa and Nicholas Galitzine, this film has it all. In this review I will look at the music from the movie and tell you what I honestly think of it. Hold tight!

Firstly, to give you a background on the movie itself I grabbed this small plot summary from the official website for the movie:

In a city where only the best succeed, two radically talented people from opposite sides of the tracks need to find harmony to achieve their dreams. In an action-packed extravaganza combining cutting edge hip-hop with contemporary and classical dance, the two must navigate their opposing worlds and prepare for a competition where winning or losing will change their lives forever.” – HighStrungTheMovie.com

So yes, it follows a similar plot to many other dance films, boy meets girl, they find out that they have a mutual love of dance and fall in love, so what is the difference?

For me, each song in the movie can stand alone as a credible pop song and that in itself sets it apart from every other film in this genre which are usually overly full with ‘album tracks/fillers’ that no big name artist wanted for theirs.

The soundtrack is full of great songs from some very cool artists including Dance Moms star Nia Sioux, Grammy award winning Mohombi and a few tracks from the movie’s original score composed by Nathan Lanier who has worked with megastar Justin Bieber. As well as that, we have huge Irish interest in this soundtrack in the form of up and coming singer/songwriter Keith Cullen, who for me has the stand out song on this compilation.

Keith’s song ‘Say Something’ is the perfect pop song with a totally unique vocal, he delivers it perfectly. From the opening of the track you are gripped and the build up to the chorus is perfection. I have already listened to this song on repeat and it is actually on right now as I write this review, that is how good it is. Although we haven’t got a video for the song yet, you can hear it on the Spotify playlist with the rest of the album below.

Another song which grabs your attention immediately comes from one of the stars of Lifetime’s TV show Dance Mom’s. Nia Sioux’s ‘DJ Fav’ is perfect for any dance party and as she says in the lyric ‘play it all night long‘, I am pretty sure there are people doing just that, especially all the Dance Mom’s fans out there.

Although the soundtrack is packed with quality uptempo pop songs, the one that is a cut above the rest for me is Mohombi’s ‘Do U Feel Like Movin’. Catchy from the second it starts and leaves you bopping along throughout, THIS is the perfect song for any summer parties you are having.

Other notable artists on the trackless include Sofi Tyler, Chris Burkich, Playb4ck, Vali and Ian Mohr. The list of great pop artists on this soundtrack is endless.

All in all, High Strung have compiled the perfect group of artists and songs for this movie and for the soundtrack alone, I would give it 10/10.

Now, have a listen and I bet you will be dancing around your room to this awesome soundtrack.

Here is the trailer for High Strung:
